"The Traditions of Christmas are Lasting Because They're Made with Love"
Today my mom and I are making her favourite dessert for the holidays. The dessert is call “Struffoli” it’s an Italian tradition that was past down from her hers mothers mother. In the small town were she grow-up in Italy, they would make this fried dough covered in honey every year for the Christmas holidays.
I was asking my mom why out of all the traditions this particular was her favourite. And she began to tell me why. She said that when she was a kid she would always ask to have it as her birthday cake. Since her birthday is on December 27 it’s was the perfect time to ask for it. It reminded her of being a kid and enjoying a plate of that delightful desert to herself. I found her story to be very touching and heartwarming.
I guess it’s true what they say traditions are always associated with a happy memory.
As I’m getting older I’m noticing that most of my family don’t believe in keeping the traditions past down from their parents. Which in turn was past down from their parents, their parents parents, ect. They say that times change and traditions change. Which I totally understand, but to me I say how much joy it brought to my grandfather. And now that he’s gone, how would he feel knowing that the traditions he shared with his children and grandchildren are gone. I guess I’m just an old soul and believe family is about passing traditions down from generation to generation.
I want to dedicate this post to my grandfather Filippo Santa Maria (May 22, 1932 - Sept 19, 2010). I love you, I miss you and I’m sure your living your best life up in heaven. Spread you wings Nonno, spread your wings.
